Team Sarcoma / West German Cancer Center, Team Sarcoma / Das Lebenhaus and Team Sarcoma / Essen University Hospital

May 11, 2008 – 8:34 pm

What: Sarcoma Lecture and Bike Tour
When: July 17, 2008 and July 26, 2008
Where: Essen, Germany

As in the previous years, Team Sarcoma / Essen will join the global Team Sarcoma Initiative. The events are collaboration among the West German Cancer Center, Das Lebenhaus and Essen University Hospital. Das Lebenshaus is the first and only patient advocacy group for sarcoma patients in Germany. Das Lebenshaus has already established a broad network for a subgroup of sarcomas, Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors (GIST), and is expanding its activities to patients with other sarcomas. The West German Cancer Center has been the first Comprehensive Cancer Center in a Germany and for many years a strong, interdisciplinary focus on the treatment of sarcomas.

On Thursday July 17, Dr. Dr. Hoiczyk and Dr. Taeger will give a lecture on current advances in sarcoma treatment and research, followed by a Q&A session. This event will take place at the Library (Bibliothek) of the Cancer Center (Tumorklinik, GBK-Gebäude) at 7 PM.

Then on July 26, there will be a 3 hour bike tour through the wonderful green surroundings of Essen. The bike tour will be a non-competitive, fun ride, except a small, optional (!) mountain stage, that will again identify the best junior, male, female and senior “racer”. To enable patients with limited physical abilities to join the Tour sarcoma experience, we will also organize a walk within the proximity of the campus. Both groups will then reunite for the now “traditional” picnic at the campus of the university hospital. As last year, we expect to have many participants from our medical sarcoma team (nurses, doctors, social workers) but also, hopefully, an increasing number of patients and their relatives and friends. Besides cold drinks and a barbecue, the get-together after the “race” will offer the chance for discussion and exchange of information.
