2010 Report: Team Sarcoma / Michael’s Angels

An Event Report from Melanie Lio
Total Participants: 716
Funds Raised for Sarcoma Research: $27,838+

When Mike died, we asked for donations in lieu of flowers for Ewing’s Sarcoma research in his memory. We collected $12,000 from approximately 300 donors. It took us some time and research to find a worthy organization to donate the funds to – and once we found Liddy Shriver, we were asked by Bruce to do an event for International Sarcoma Awareness Week.

We formed a group of 15 volunteers and called ourselves “Michael’s Angels” We decided to do a direct mail campaign. We have collected $6,785 to date.

We decided that was not enough. We wanted to design wristbands and t-shirts and offer them for donations. We decided to do a group event at a major league baseball game, and dubbed our theme STRIKE OUT SARCOMA!

Our next event was Rally at the Lio’s held on July 175h. We provided free food and drinks and sold our wristbands, t-shirts and baseball tickets. We had a total of 116 seats. That event netted $6,678 and was attended by approx 75 people.

Strike out SarcomaOur next event was a pre-game happy hour with free food and drinks hosted by Majerle’s Sports Grill. They allowed us to sell our wristbands and t-shirts and game tickets and pass out awareness flyers. They did all of this for free just for the publicity thanks to JGroup Media – one of Mike’s friends was interning there and told the boss the story and the rest is history. We had approx 150 people that attended that event and we raised $2,375. We then headed over to the ball game and had a block of 116 seats filled with STRIKE OUT SARCOMA and I LIKE IKE t-shirts and sarcoma awareness posters. The players on both ball clubs wore our STRIKE OUT SARCOMA wristbands on national TV and we got interviewed live and got to tell our story. During the course of this week, we have had one magazine article, two newpaper articles, and two television interviews during which time we were able to spread Sarcoma Awareness and bring attention to our events.

We also have NY Mets 1st baseman, Ike Davis, doing a rookie t-shirt campaign, and he is donating part of the proceeds of the shirt sales to the Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative in memory of Mike Lio. Mike & Ike were good friends who played ball together from 7th grade on and won 3 High School State championships together and were on an award winning travel ball team together. The proceeds of that campaign will be distributed to Liddy Shriver on a quarterly basis. Ike has committed to helping promote a yearly event with “Michael’s Angels” to raise awareness and funding for Ewing’s Sarcoma research in memory of his friend, Mike Lio.

This has turned out to be so much more than I could have hoped for, and I am really proud of all of the girls and all of the time and talents that they put into our events. I look forward to being involved in the years to come.

Note: This event is also featured in our local press coverage.

2010 Report: Team Sarcoma / Cancer Treatment Centers of America

Annie’s Night
Friday, July 23rd at 12:30pm
Goodyear, Arizona

Our very first Sarcoma event, Annie’s Night, was held on Friday, July 23rd at 12:30pm. Dr. Jeffrey Weber opened the program with a few words about sarcoma and the continuing need for funding. He shared the story of his daughter, Annie, and her battle with sarcoma. The loss of a beloved child really brought home to all present the very real effects of sarcoma.

Cast members from The Arizona Broadway Theater performed numbers from their upcoming production, “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change” and their current production, “Footloose”. A few of the members performed songs of hope, strength and joy. Many of our patients were particularly touched by the messages shared through song.

We raffled off gift baskets, tickets to the Arizona Broadway Theatre, and baseball tickets. This first year we raised $520. We look forward to continuing our partnership with Arizona Broadway Theatre and increasing the scope of our event in future years.

2009 Team Sarcoma / Cancer Treatment Centers of America

We presented facts and education about the fight against sarcoma cancers in the oncology clinic here at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America at the Western Regional Medical Center in Goodyear, Arizona this week and distributed bracelets to the staff. They are 100% on board in this effort to find treatments and even cures for this scourge that robbed our children of their futures. We look forward to further efforts in the future.
