2010 Report: Team Sarcoma / Scuba with the Sharks

Scuba with the Sharks
Wilmington, North Carolina

Dr. Jeff Toretsky of Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center hosted two successful days of diving during International Sarcoma Awareness Week. Twenty people joined in the experience, and each day Dr. Toretsky spoke briefly about sarcoma and distributed “Sarcoma Knows No Borders” bracelets.

The diving took place at two scuttled transport ships, the Hyde and Markham. They are located 18 miles off the coast of Wilmington, NC. They are teeming with marine life, including sharks. The water was a wonderful 84 degrees at the surface and about 73 degrees down at the bottom (about 80 feet).

2008 Team Sarcoma / The Ryan Glenny Grind in North Carolina

UPDATE: A Note from John Glenny – With the help of many friends, family, and neighbors we had almost 100 runners participate in the runs and 35 skaters in the skate competition. The day went as smoothly as anyone could have imagined. We had ample food and drinks donated by local businesses, and equipment and hands on assistance as well. Combining team members, participants and their friends and family, and visitors we must have had at least 300 people at the events at various times.

With an Internet fund raising campaign and additional fund raising by some of the skaters along with shirt, food, drink, and other donations, we ended up raising about $7500. The events were far and above anyone’s expectations and the day was a tribute to Ryan and a success for sarcoma research awareness and funding.

2008 Team Sarcoma / North Carolina – Duke

Team Sarcoma DukeThe NC Team Sarcoma organized the third annual “5K Run/Walk for a Cure” on July 13th 2008, at the Duke Golf Trail in Durham, North Carolina. There were a total of about 30 participants, including people from the towns of Durham, Chapel Hill and Raleigh. It was especially touching to see among the participants a young lady, who recently won her battle against Rhabdomyosarcoma, with her entire family.

Collectively, including donations from people who could not make it for the run/walk, we raised $850. Like last year, the event was very well received and we hope to make it even more successful next year.
