Sarcoma Awareness on Facebook
July 17-25, 2010
Worldwide
The AngioSarcoma Cancer Group on Facebook invited everyone affected by sarcoma to participate in this Facebook event. More than 300 people increased sarcoma awareness by posting the Sarcoma Facts on their profile pages and doing something fun with the Team Sarcoma logo. Many inspiring messages and photos were posted on the event wall.

More than 300 people from 17 countries lit candles on the “Light a Candle” website. The lit candles formed a “virtual” luminary for those touched by sarcoma. Many of the dedications were beautifully written, from the heart, out of love. Just as with real luminaries, the candles eventually burned out, but more than 800 people visited the site during July 23-25. Many will remember the dedications that touched their hearts in a special way.

About 140 people participated in a couple of very successful “Do Your ‘S’ for SARCOMA” events. A “Skipping for SARCOMA” tent at the Kids with Cancer Relay & Walk (attended by 800 people) challenged kids with cancer and their families, relatives and friends to “Skip for SARCOMA” on a beautiful sunny day in Edmonton’s beautiful river valley.
In a second “Do Your ‘S’ for SARCOMA” event, Katie & friends got together and “Stampeded for SARCOMA” at the local Stampede.

On Facebook Pages Around the World
During International Sarcoma Awareness Week, 2958 people spread the word about sarcoma using their Facebook pages. Participants posted pictures, shared experiences, created signs, and even posted poetry to increase sarcoma awareness. They stopped by the Facebook Event Page and wrote inspiring, heartfelt messages about facing sarcoma. They honored their loved ones and wrote about their own struggles. This online activity added a new level of comraderie and support to the Team Sarcoma Initiative, and we look forward to continuing it next year!

UPDATE: About 200 people lit candles in the International Luminary Event throughout International Sarcoma Awareness Week.
Everyone around the world is invited to participate in this very special event. As a part of Team Sarcoma, David and Amy Dearinger of Independence, Kentucky, will send a luminary to your home to light each evening of International Sarcoma Awareness Week.
This will be the second year the Dearinger’s have hosted such an event. In 2008 this event not only raised $1,440.00 for research funding, but it also brought much needed awareness to this underfunded and extremely rare, aggressive cancer. The luminaries are lit in memory of those we have lost to sarcoma, and in honor of those battling this horrific cancer, as well as their caregivers.
If you would like to participate in this event, simply email the Dearingers with your request. Dave and Amy will gladly send each member of your family a luminary to illuminate each evening of this very special week. All they ask is that you make a donation direct to The Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative. Every cent counts and there isn’t any donation too small or too large.
