2009 Report: Team Sarcoma / Emory Winship Cancer Institute

2009 Team Sarcoma/ Emory Winship Cancer InstituteWalk for Sarcoma Awareness
July 24, 2009, in Atlanta, Georgia

Emory Winship Cancer Institute and the Southeastern Sarcoma Foundation hosted the 2nd Annual “Walk for Sarcoma Awareness” as part of the Team Sarcoma Initiative. The event was as superb success. We doubled last year’s attendance with 128 walkers and have raised more than $3,000.00 from donations at the walk. We celebrated the day with a great mix of sarcoma patients, survivors, caregivers, friends, family, supports and large contingent of the Emory Winship Sarcoma Department Team! Doctors, nurses, support staff and even development staff came out to walk and support. Every discipline (radiation, surgical and medical sarcoma oncology) had representatives walking. It truly was a perfect night. We started at 7pm and finished with a great dinner at Willy’s Mexicana Grill around 11pm.

This was a great opportunity to show support to the newly designated National Cancer Institute (NCI) Emory Winship Cancer Institute and its groundbreaking Sarcoma Department. The event was co-sponsored by the newly founded Southeastern Sarcoma Foundation, which has already donated over $7,500.00 directly to sarcoma research at Winship. The walk helped expose Sarcoma to the southeast and honored those who are survivors, caregivers and fallen heroes of sarcoma.

Emory Winship Cancer Institute and the Southeastern Sarcoma Foundation will host the 2nd Annual “Walk for Sarcoma Awareness” as part of the Team Sarcoma Initiative. The walk will take place at Atlanta’s Piedmont Park baseball fields (located next to the entrance to the public tennis courts). This is a great opportunity to show support to the newly designated National Cancer Institute (NCI) Emory Winship Cancer Institute and its groundbreaking Sarcoma Department. The event is co-sponsored by the newly founded Southeastern Sarcoma Foundation, which has already donated over $7,500.00 directly to sarcoma research at Winship. This walk will help expose Sarcoma to the southeast, as well as honor those who are survivors, caregivers and fallen heroes of sarcoma.

This is a family friendly event. The walk will take place from 7pm to 8pm and, for those who wish to make a night of it, we will continue at a local restaurant patio directly on the park at 12th Street and Piedmont Rd. Support bracelets and event t-shirts will be available for purchase, with all proceeds going directly to sarcoma research at Emory Winship Cancer Institute.
