2009 Report: Team Sarcoma / Vermont

Seven 10K’s for Sarcoma
July 19-25, 2009 in St. Albans, Vermont

Fifty-five people participated in this event and raised more than $2,200. Karen Dukas, the organizer of this event, reports about an incredible week of beautiful weather:

This year I invited people to take the challenge with me and run, walk or bike a 5K or 10K everyday for seven days. It is a huge commitment, but a having a healthy heart saved my life and I wanted to encourage others to have healthy hearts too. Many people solicited sponsorships or sponsored themselves and joined the team. Some committed to every day, and others did the days that worked into their schedules.

I ran everyday at 9:30am each day along lake Champlain. I did not run alone one day, and some days there were as many as ten of us. On the final day, 35 of the 55 team members were able to gather at camp for our final 5/10K. What a sight, 35 people running, walking and biking down Maquam Shore in our green Team Sarcoma Vermont shirts!

Thank you and blessings to the Seven 10K’s for Sarcoma team 2009! A special thank you to my niece Emily for being babysitter and secretary!

2008 Team Sarcoma / Vermont

What: Seven 10K’s for Sarcoma
When: Monday – Friday, July 13-19
Where: The shoreline of Lake Champlain, Vermont

During the week of July 13-19, Karen Dukas, a liposarcoma survivor, ran a 10K each day along the beautiful shoreline of Lake Champlain in Vermont to increase public awareness of sarcoma as part of the International Sarcoma Awareness Week. Each started at around 9am at her family’s camp and went along the lake for 3.1 miles, then returned back to camp to complete a 6.2 mile run with a refreshing dip in the lake. She welcomed anyone to join her each day.

Report from Karen: I had an awesome week of 10k’s. The weather was perfect except for the first day which was rainy and very windy but only got better after that. The temperatures the rest of the week ranged from high 70’s to low 80’s always a slight breeze and well shaded. The people who ran with me were family, lifelong friends, colleagues and acquaintances. Much expression of
thanks to Gary, Lisa, Sandra, Dee, Daphne, MaryPat and Nancy. Some days we were three of us, others two, and only two days one…me! But I never run alone. On Wednesday I ran with Jesus saying my rosary all the way. No surprise to me it was my fastest time all week. Thursday I ran with my memories, reflecting on my personal experience with Sarcoma and giving thanks to be able to do these runs today. Thursday was my second fastest run! I had very special company riding their bikes on two of the seven days; my daughters Jordyn age 10 and Kamren 9.

Between sponsors, runners, babysitters and supporters I would estimates around 30 people participated in Team Seven 10K’s for Sarcoma. We will definitely participate again next year.

2007 Team Sarcoma / The Core Team

In 2007, the “core” Team Sarcoma biked in the Lake Champlain area of Vermont during July 14-21. There were 52 participants on the team representing nine countries (China, Denmark, France, Japan, Mexico, Poland, Spain, the Netherlands and the United States) and 11 sub-types of sarcoma. They were joined by a number of “day trippers” along the way, including sarcoma oncologists, nurses, patients, caregivers, and survivors. The makeup of this team showed the international nature of the Team Sarcoma Initiative.
