Out of the Shadows and into the Sun
On Saturday, July 24 a group young adult cancer survivors and our loved ones gathered for a brunch in Oakland, CA to honor all those affected by sarcomas. The event was hosted by a member of the Desmoid Tumor Research Foundation (and desmoid tumor survivor) and attended by members of the Bay Area and Sacramento chapters of I2Y (I’m Too Young for This, young adult cancer group).
At the brunch we provided literature on sarcomas and the national organizations that support survivors. The focus of the event was the joy of community. To add to our fun, we all wore foam clown noses (as you can see in our group picture) and enjoyed a sunny morning of celebration. All of us young adult cancer survivors have experienced the loss of peers and relationships as a result of our cancer journey and the seriousness of facing an uncertain and certainly changed future. So in getting together in the spirit of sarcoma awareness, we spent the morning celebrating the light and joy that comes from a community of support.
Thank you International Sarcoma Week for bringing us together!!

Picnic for a Cure
July 25, 2009
Near Placerville, California
The 2nd annual Northern California Team Sarcoma was a great success! We had over 90 people participate in this year’s event and raised over $4,000 for sarcoma research. In addition, we had others who could not attend support our event by making a contribution to the cause. The picnic grounds at the Jack Russell Brewery worked wonderfully. We had a tumor piñata, corn hole tournament, raffle, band, BBQ, balls and bubbles for the kids, educational displays, squirt bottles and shade areas to stay cool.
We were privileged to have 4 sarcoma survivors attend our event along with a group from the Team Sarcoma/Team Sammie event held on July 18th. We were excited we have found an event location that works well for us and plan on holding our 3rd annual event there also. Team Sarcoma events are wonderful, local-grown events that can, and will, make a difference in the lives of those effected by sarcomas.
