Be a part of the 2010 Team Sarcoma Initiative by forming a local team in your area! Local Team Sarcoma events are planned by creative and caring people who want to make a difference in the lives of sarcoma patients and their families.
Envision an event for your community
As a local team organizer, you can envision and plan an event that will reach your community during International Sarcoma Awareness Week in July. Be creative and choose an activity that will attract your family, friends and neighbors. Need help? Contact us to discuss your ideas! Past events have included:
- Runs, walks, and sunset strolls
- Cycling and swimming events
- Bowling and fishing tournaments
- Skateboarding and soccer events
- Picnics and rummage sales
- Letter writing campaigns
- Educational talks, seminars and physician consultations
- Luminaries
- Musical and theatrical events
Register as an official Team Sarcoma event
To be sanctioned as an official Team Sarcoma event, you need to register your event with us. It’s a very simple process: Send us a note as soon as possible telling us that you’d like to organize a local Team Sarcoma event, and we’ll help you with the details.
Spread the word
Tell everyone what you’re doing and why! By discussing sarcoma with others, you help increase public awareness about sarcoma. Here are some ideas for spreading the word:
- Create event flyers to post and distribute
- Create a website to publicize your event
- Make posters to put up during your event
- Share information about sarcoma with family and friends.
Alert the media
Let your local newspaper and TV news, documentary, and public service programs know about your event and the worldwide Team Sarcoma Initiative. Share your local Team Sarcoma’s story and the Sarcoma Facts with them. If we can help you with this effort, please let us know.
Provide Team Sarcoma bracelets and t-shirts
1. A “Sarcoma Knows No Borders” bracelet should be included in the registration packet of each participant in your Team Sarcoma Event.
The mantra of the Team Sarcoma Initiative is “Sarcoma Knows No Borders”. We use this phrase because sarcomas can occur anywhere in the body and they don’t discriminate on age, gender, race or nationality. People from all over the globe participate in Team Sarcoma Events ― young, old, women, men, from countries across Europe, through Asia and Pacific regions, and in North and Central America. The Team Sarcoma bracelet has “Sarcoma Knows No Borders” printed on one side and the word “sarcoma” printed in 13 of the world’s languages on the other side. The background color of the bracelet is a swirl of a pathology slide of a sarcoma patient.
2. Most local teams provide t-shirts for their participants. There are three options for obtaining t-shirts:
- You can have your own Team Sarcoma T-Shirts made. Many local teams choose this option. They look for a sponsor to help defray the cost of the shirts or a printer who will provide a discounted rate. The phrase “Team Sarcoma” should appear somewhere on the T-Shirt. Please also consider including the phrase “Sarcoma Knows No Borders.”
- You can use our Team Sarcoma T-Shirts which are available for online purchase. These shirts have “Sarcoma Knows Know Borders” emblazoned on the back and come in a number of languages.
- We can assist you in having the Team Sarcoma T-Shirts personalized for your own event through Cafépress; see, for example, see the ABC Survivors Team Sarcoma T-Shirt. Please send Bruce Shriver a note to learn more details about this option.
Decide if you’d like to raise funds
Some event organizers and participants choose to raise funds during the Team Sarcoma Initiative. Typical recipients of the funds are sarcoma research organizations, sarcoma patient assistance funds, sarcoma medical centers, and other sarcoma-related charitable organizations. Team members can contact friends, family, and colleagues to sponsor their participation in their local Team Sarcoma event to help raise money for sarcoma-related research. Even if an event is a fundraiser, organizers are asked to allow each team member to choose whether or not to solicit donations.
Enjoy – and tell us how it went
Local team organizers tell us what they did and where they did it. They send us pictures of the members of their team, and we post them on the Team Sarcoma website. Take a look at some of the 2009 event reports to read the stories of the wonderful and creative things that have been accomplished worldwide by people like you.
