On July 5 2008 Truus van der Spek and Roel Piket from the ADG Bridge Club will organize the Dutch Sarcoma Awareness Bridge Drive, the first ever sarcoma awareness mind game event! 200 competitors (100 pairs) can join this event and tell their friends and relatives about sarcoma. The event will take place in Leiden at the Leidse Denksport Centrum. Denkpsort is Dutch for “mind games” such as bridge, chess, checkers, and go.
The tournament will be joined by some of the members of the Dutch national bridge teams. Sponsors can play with national and local celebrities. The Dutch junior bridge team will play the boards before the actual tournament and write a short comment on every board. This way at the end of the tournament every competitor will get a booklet with the best results on the boards they played. This booklet also will contain information about sarcoma and advertisements.
In addition to raising sarcoma awareness, Team Sarcoma/The Netherlands also intends to raise money to help sponsor a sarcoma research grant through the Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative.
Truus van der Spek is the mother of Paul Onvlee who died of Ewing’s sarcoma in 2003. Drinks and food will be distributed by friends of Paul and his brother Peter-Bas. They will wear the Team Sarcoma T-shirts and “Sarcoma Knows No Borders” bracelets.
