International Sarcoma Awareness Week Update: July 26th

International Sarcoma Awareness Week has come to a close, and we continue to hear exciting news from team leaders around the globe. With many events yet to report, it is too soon to say exactly how many people participated in the global effort, but the preliminary numbers are encouraging!

Reports from the Field

  • In Australia, 1650 people raised more than $4,600 on a beautiful day at the TAG Surf Event!
  • In Michigan, 600 people played soccer for 24 hours straight in torrential downpours, raising $5,000 for sarcoma research!
  • More than 200 people walked, ran and learned about sarcoma in the South Carolina heat as a part of the 5k Run for Hope.
  • An all-day meeting in Spain featured presentations about sarcoma research and a walking tour of Barcelona. More than 200 people were in attendance.
  • Golfers braved the rain to join in the Adrianne Pfeiffer Memorial Golf Tournament, which involved 120 participants in Pennsylvania.
  • A group of 100 people walked, biked and chatted in Westchester, New York, raising more than $1,000 for sarcoma research.
  • Twenty-two people learned about sarcoma and wore “Sarcoma Knows No Borders” bracelets while swimming with the sharks off the coast of North Carolina.
  • A nature walk in Malaysia included 75 people and a discussion about sarcoma with a sarcoma survivor.
  • More than 300 people shared information about sarcoma on Facebook as a part of the AngioSarcoma Cancer group’s event
  • More than 160 people braved the heat to join in the 3rd annual Sarcoma Awareness Walk in Atlanta, Georgia.
  • Sixteen bikers enjoyed a ride on a beautiful day at Denmark’s Team Sarcoma event.
  • About 30 patients, carers and family members attended a picnic at Moors Valley Country Park in England.
  • Twenty-five people participated in Seven 10K’s for Sarcoma as a part of Team Heavenly Rainbow Cross-Roads.

International Sarcoma Awareness Week Update: July 24th

It’s the final weekend of International Sarcoma Awareness Week, and events are scheduled to take place in six countries and 12 states today.

Reports from the Field

  • Michael’s Angels have rallied more than 716 participants in various activities, raising about $28,000 for sarcoma research! The “Strike out Sarcoma” event attracted more than 100 participants to an Arizona Diamondbacks in Phoenix. Many of the baseball players and cheerleaders wore “Sarcoma Knows No Borders” bracelets during the televised game.
  • About 525 bikers and volunteers raised more than $135,000 during the 6th annual “Reid’s Ride Bike-a-thon” in Lynnfield, Massachusetts!
  • So far, 2,561 people have joined in the “Sarcoma Knows No Borders” event on Facebook, posting meaningful messages and photos that are increasing sarcoma awareness and creating a wonderful sense of community and support.
  • The 4th annual “Golf for Gordie” in Michigan brought together 114 people on a hot, sunny day and raised $7,200 for sarcoma research!
  • The Butterfly Effect Luncheon in Queensland, Australia, included 91 participants and raised more than $1,100 for sarcoma research.
  • Sixty-five people golfed and enjoyed dinner in Kentucky as a part of  Swinging for Sarcoma.
  • Fifty people joined in the Healing Hearts Walk n Shop on a hot day in Cedar Hill, Texas.
  • About 100 people enjoyed a baseball game in Buffalo with Roswell Park Cancer Center, and a small raffle raised $400 for sarcoma research.

It’s the middle of International Sarcoma Awareness Week, and we’d like to thank everyone who has participated in more than 30 events so far! More exciting events are coming up today through Sunday.

Reports from the Field

  • The Kenny Allen Memorial Ride for Sarcoma attracted 450 generous bikers who contributed more than $22,000 for sarcoma research!
  • More than 280 people joined in the PSSRF Walk, Run or Cycle in New Jersey on an extremely hot day, raising more than $17,000 for sarcoma research!
  • Nearly 350 patients, survivors, medical team members and supporters gathered for a day of baseball at Sarcoma Day at the K.
  • About 100 people joined in the 70 and Sunny Fun Run on a beautiful day, raising nearly $2,000 for sarcoma research.
  • About 120 people joined in the Everyday Heroes Competition hosted by the Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative, which awarded $8,500 to sarcoma research.

It’s the third day of International Sarcoma Awareness Week, and we’re hearing great things from events that are taking place!

The Team Sarcoma “Butterfly Dinner Dance” in Australia

Reports from the Field

  • The Butterfly Dinner Dance in Queensland, Australia brought together 260 people for a beautiful evening of dinner, dancing and auction bidding.
  • Despite the pouring rain, 40 people gathered in Appleton, Wisconsin for the Fun in the Park & 5k Walk in support of Dan’s House of Hope.
  • The fifth annual Sarcoma Bike Tour in Essen, Germany attracted a new record of 70 participants! The group enjoyed biking in excellent weather, followed by a barbecue and some friendly soccer play.
  • Seventy people braved the heat to participate in the Stomp Out Sarcoma 5K in Dexter, Michigan. The fun family event raised more than $600 for sarcoma research!

It’s the second day of International Sarcoma Awareness Week, and 14 Team Sarcoma events are scheduled to take place today. Exciting reports have begun to trickle in about Saturday’s events!

Reports from the Field

  • Despite forecasts of temperatures in the triple-digits, 250 people showed up to run the streets of Waco in the Be A Superhero: Team Sarcoma 5K. More than $10,000 was raised for sarcoma research!
  • There wasn’t a cloud in the sky as 321 people participated in the 2nd Annual 5K Run/Walk for Hope in Sandusky, Ohio, to benefit the Jim Hauser Sarcoma Foundation.
  • Seventy people gathered in East Petersburg, Pennsylvania for the the Keepin’ it Kevin Bike, Walk and Run, which raised about $5,000 for sarcoma research!
  • Nearly 40 people walked in the 90-degree heat along the Freedom Trail for Team Sarcoma Boston.
  • Sixty-six people joined in Team Sarcoma France for a walking tour and an oncology presentation.
  • Seventy people joined in the First Annual sPECial Race 5K, including several sarcoma survivors and their families. The event raised more than $1,600 for sarcoma research!

Reports from the Field

Our participation tally includes a few Team Sarcoma events that occurred before International Sarcoma Awareness Week due to scheduling issues. Here are our first preliminary reports:

  • More than 2,500 people joined in the “Sarcoma Knows No Borders” Race and Walk in Mexico City, which raised nearly $100,000 for sarcoma research and support.
  • About 760 people biked and volunteered in the rainy streets of Warsaw, Poland during Warsaw Critical Mass.
  • About 350 people gathered “At the Ballpark for Sarcoma” in Toronto, Canada. Information about sarcoma was shared at the start of the game, and there were more than 35,000 people in attendance.
  • The “Sarcoma Knows No Borders” Signature and Consultation Event in China was attended by more than 200 people. Free consultations with sarcoma experts were provided, literature was distributed, and participants signed a special poster.
  • A crowd of more than 250 participants and volunteers joined in Fishin’ for the Cure at the Fort Peck Reservoir in Montana. More than $11,000 was raised for sarcoma research.
  • Twenty people gathered in London and endured a heavy rain shower during the Picnic in Hyde Park.
  • Moffitt Cancer Center received rave reviews for its educational presentations, which involved 137 people.
